How To Clean a Tobacco Pipe?

Cleaning your tobacco pipe is an important part of your smoking practice. Smoking a pipe can be quite meditative and so can cleaning it. In this blog article we give you the tools to take care of your pipe on a daily, weekly and seasonal basis. Whilst the daily and weekly cleaning practices are the most important, these are perhaps already familiar to you, in which case the more rare and thorough cleaning tips might be just what you were looking for. Regardless of where you are in your pipe smoking habits, we hope that you will find some useful knowledge in this guide on how to clean a tobacco pipe.

Pipes and cleaning basics

Here are some basic elements of pipe cleaning:

  • A clean tobacco pipe gives you a better smoking experience
  • Cleaning your pipe will give it a longer life
  • Separate your pipe only when it is cold

Furthermore, you need some tools and equipment to be able to properly clean your smoking pipe. Being prepared and having these things at the ready makes it much more likely that you remember to clean your pipe regularly. We recommend that you make sure to always have at least these things in the cupboard.

Must-have:

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Cotton swabs
  • Pipe tool
  • Cloths
  • Alcohol or liquor

When it comes to alcohol, you can either go for a low percentage alcohol or a spirit with or without flavour. Vodka is the spirit of choice if you want an odourless cleaning, but you can also use your favourite rum or whisky, if you want the liquor to impart some of its perfume to your pipe.

Nice-to-have:

  • Reamer
  • Pipette

Daily cleaning of your pipe

The basic daily cleaning is part of your routine after smoking, and as long as you don’t separate the pipe, you can do this also when your pipe is slightly warm.

Here is a simple list to go by when cleaning your pipe:

  • Empty out the pipe chamber
  • Clean the stem and shank
  • Clean the rim

Softly knock or brush the ash from your pipe. You can use the small spoon in your pipe tool to achieve this. Run a pipe cleaner through the stem and the shank. The shank is the part between the stem and the chamber. Clean the rim with a moist cloth or similar. This simple daily cleaning routine will keep your smoking pipe clean and make sure that it doesn’t build up a bitter taste too easily.

How to clean a clogged smoking pipe

If your pipe is clogged you can unclog it with a pipe tool or pipe cleaner. Try to gently push the clog through the stem in the direction of the chamber. You might have to tap the bowl in the palm of your hand a few times to help the clog leave the stem.

Weekly cleaning of your pipe

Whilst the daily routine is very common sense, and something you might do even without considering it cleaning, the weekly cleaning of your pipe is more thorough and technical. We call it the weekly routine, but you can do this type of cleaning less often of course.

We’ve divided this cleaning practice into four categories that relate to three parts of your pipe: Shank, stem and chamber. This process is one where you disassemble your pipe, so it needs to be cold before you proceed.

  1. Clean the interior of the shank with a cotton swab doused in alcohol or your favourite spirit. This will do a good cleaning of the surface and afterwards you can run a dry pipe cleaner through to soak up any moisture.
  2. Proceed with cleaning the stem in similar fashion, using a pipe cleaner moist with alcohol or spirit. Go all the way through, so that the dirt is carried out as cleanly as possible. Run a dry pipe cleaner through afterwards.
  3. Use a cloth or a folded pipe cleaner doused in spirit to clean the chamber, which is the inside of the bowl. You simply rub until the chamber is nice and black without any loose residue.

Following these simple procedures will make sure that your pipe is always good to go and nice to smoke.

Seasonal cleaning of your pipe

This seasonal cleaning is something you can do rarely, if you do the weekly cleaning regularly, and as often as every month, if you seem to forget your weekly cleaning routine.

The parts of the pipe that you will be cleaning are the stem, the shank and the rim.

The stem

At the end of the stem, closest to the shank, you’ll find the tenon. The inside of the tenon will need to be scraped clean from time to time, and you can do this with the aid of your alcohol or spirit. Once this is done you can clean the stem in the same way as in your weekly routine.

The chamber

The chamber of your pipe will most likely gather a layer of sediment from your tobacco, and this layer is called cake. Having a small layer of cake is perfectly fine, but it can grow too big, and impact the taste when you smoke. The technique for removing unwanted parts of the cake is called reaming, and you can do this either with a dull blade or with the tool made for the job, the pipe reamer.

The rim

You might find a layer of char on the rim of your pipe; in which case you’ll need to clean it with more than a moist cloth. Take a cotton swab doused with your spirit and wipe the rim with the swab. If this is not enough, you can use a cloth instead. And if the char is really thick and tough to remove, you can use the aforementioned dull knife to gently scrape off the char.
