Tao

Tao started “Svendborg Pipes” in 1972 together with Poul Ilsted, but since 1981 he has been an independent pipe maker. His unique, handmade pipes have stems of black rubber, artificial amber or Cumberland. The belts are nearly always made of silver, and they form a perfect connection between stem and shank. Tao’s trademark is a serrated arrow. If you are a sailor or just fascinated by the sea, you will look at Tao’s pipes and realize that the two belong together.

Maritime materials

Tao pipes are as maritime as they come, both in look and the materials used. Besides apple wood as the main material used for the shank, Tao uses exotic whale tooth and sperm whale tooth as part of the stem. Tao has also included bamboo in some stems of his handmade pipes.

This makes the pipe a very unique acquisition for all collectors, regardless of whether you’re an aspiring collector or you already have a broad collection of smoking pipes. On this page you will find our finest selection of Tao pipes, made with true craftsmanship and skill. Several of the pipes displayed here are of a lighter variety than the classic briar pipes.
